Portobello mushrooms are probably the most popular variety of mushrooms across the globe. Scientific name for Portobello mushroom is Agaricus bisporus. Portobello mushroom is the matured form of white button mushrooms. White button mushroom is commonly known as common mushroom, button mushroom, white mushroom, cultivated mushroom, table mushroom and champignon mushroom. The brown variety of these mushrooms is known as Swiss brown mushroom, Roman brown mushroom, Italian brown, Italian mushroom, cremini/crimini mushroom, brown cap mushrooms, and chestnut mushroom.

Portobello mushrooms are slightly flat as compared to white button mushrooms. They are dark brownish in colour and have fins under the gap. These fins are greyish in colour. Portobello mushrooms are popular for their meaty flavour. These mushrooms are often used as healthy substitutes for burgers by many. Portobello mushrooms have a brownish cap. The brown colour signifies its maturity. As the mushroom matures the fins underneath the mushroom turn darker and firmer. These mushrooms are larger and firmer than their white button counterparts.

It is commonly grown in fields and marshy areas. Portobello mushrooms are commonly used in Asian cuisine especially Chinese cuisine. Portobello mushrooms are also hot favourites at barbecue parties. These mushrooms are grown in around seventy plus countries. Estimated global production of Portobello mushrooms in a year is about 1.5 million tons.
